Sisters and Brothers,

Who does not want to be independent and decide about his or her life? Who between us do not want to have control and be in charge over all aspects of our existence? We value our health and money because they help us to feel free and self-sufficient. Even a simple driving licence makes us free from dependency from others. We do not like to ask people for any favour; we do not want to feel like we beg for someone’s kindness.

We are proud people. We do not want to ask for help because it could mean that we do not have full control over something. If we are forced to ask for help, we are losing our confidence in ourselves. If we ask for a favour, later we have to be grateful, we should thank these people. But we are proud.

Today, ten lepper men came to Jesus. The ten poor men who, as much as they could, wanted to live independently. They lived together and supported each other. They did not ask health people for help. They were proud; they had their dignity. They did not need anyone’s mercy.

Even so, self-sufficient groups like the ten leppers went to the point that they had to ask for help, to ask Jesus to heal them. But even in that moment their pride kept them at a distance from Jesus and the crowd. Their health and the living conditions forced them to approach Jesus. Surely, they had heard about Jesus and his healing power. If they had to beg someone for help, they chose to ask Jesus.

It is hard to ask someone for help. But it is even more difficult to acknowledge to ourselves that we need help, that we are not ‘know-it-all’ people.

We have to acknowledge to ourselves that our lives depend on God. We have to tell ourselves that we are limited creatures, our minds, our health and our skills have limits. Nobody is ‘almighty’. Many times, in our lives we are like these ten leppers; we come to the point when we can do nothing without help. In these moments we need to ask Jesus to heal all problems in our lives.

But to ask God for help is not shameful. To seek Jesus’ support is not a dishonour. When you approach Jesus and pray you are keeping your dignity. Maybe only your pride will suffer a bit.

Even we love our freedom, do not be afraid to depend on God. We are his children and God as the Father he is happy to heal our ‘leprosy’.

Finally, like the lepper Samaritan, let us be grateful. Let us thank God for all blessings of our lives.

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Bogdan
