Sisters and Brothers,
Every year thousands of young people start their study in various fields. Many of them study arts, music or acting, and many of them go on to music academies and acting schools. Every student starting study has a dream, a dream that after getting a diploma he or she will be popular, they will be famous and loved by crowds. But reality is that thousands of people have that dream. But not everyone is Hans Zimmer or Ennio Morricone. Many want to be the stars of the big screen but not everyone can be Al Pacino or Julia Roberts.
There is maybe one percent of people who succeed in many different fields. If we talk about musicians, actors and artists, it is surely even less. The school certificate is not enough to be the best in any domain. We would like that everyone has the same outcome, and everything be fair. But in the real world, who is more skilled, who works harder, and is luckier has better results.
Almost every person coming to the church can show their baptism certificate. Many even have documents to prove their first holy communion and the sacrament of confirmation. But what does it mean? What kind of prize we can have for it? Not much.
Today Jesus encourages us to find a narrow door. Do not follow everyone around you. Have ambitions to be better than the average person, than a common believer. Your eyes cannot be focused on your family, friends or the people next to you. Yes, maybe they have some good ideas, maybe even they can give you a good example of living. But at the end, our eyes have to be focused on Christ. Only he can lead us to the narrow door. Only Jesus is the Truth and the Way to that door.
Who can be saved? Who will be in heaven with Christ? How many will succeed? Just a few? We do not know. Jesus did not say that, and he did not deny. Indeed, he wants us to be ambitious, to be the best, simply to be saints. We have to seek the narrow door every single day; we need to practice our faith trough prayer and loving our neighbours.
The certificates from the acting or music academies allowed students to join theatres and perform on stage but not give them the guarantee of success, to be the one percent of the best.
Your baptism certificate makes you the child of God and the member of the Church. But it’s not a guarantee to be saved. You have to find a narrow door to succeed.
Have a blessed week,
Fr. Bogdan
