Sisters and Brothers,
Fire – a very powerful but ambivalent element; sometimes friendly, sometimes our enemy. From prehistorical times people were scared of fire and fascinated by it at the same time. On the one hand fire can be a killer, and on the other hand it helped us to hit the highest gear of human’s evolution.
It is something beautiful and fascinating in flames, but it can terrify us as well.
In Australia we know it so well; fire can give life and can destroy it. The huge bushfires can damage whole villages and towns. On the other hand, nature needs the bushfire to open the seeds of eucalyptuses. Fire can destroy life and can help to start it as well.
The symbol of fire is used many times in the Bible. The cities of Sodom and Gomora were finished by it. In another time God walked as a “pillar of fire” with the Israelites to help them to leave Egypt, and the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles in the image of flames.
Today Jesus brings fire to the earth. And he desires that it is blazing already. The spiritual flames have a dual task; firstly, they clean and purify everything what is not clean enough. Because what is not clean and not holy cannot go to heaven. That fire burns our sins and unholy desires. It makes us ready to meet God.
Secondly, Jesus put that fire into our hearts to increase our faith, trust and love of God. The flames of love which Jesus has in his heart he wants to share with anyone who is ready and open enough to receive it.
At the beginning he shares with his disciples and the people of Galilee who are following him and those who are open to his words. Later Jesus puts that fire into the hearts of many people of Israel.
But Jesus does not want to stay on a small piece of land. He wants to be everywhere, to reach all people, from all nations and all languages.
He wants his fire, the flames of love, to spread everywhere, to every corner of the world. Let the wind of the Holy Spirit take that fire to the furthest hearts on our planet.
The fire which Jesus wants to share with us can be scary. It is a powerful fire and can destroy our present lives. But we should not worry. It is starting a new one within us. Let us be open to these flames. Let our hearts burn for love, love to God and our neighbours. Allow Jesus to put his fire into your heart and share it with others.
Have a blessed week,
Fr. Bogdan
